Copán, Honduras

These beautiful and well-preserved ruins in Honduras began as a small settlement around 1000 BC and became a major Maya city later on.

The ruins, discovered by Diego García de Palacio in 1570, were mostly covered in soil and needed to be excavated to uncover all features. Nowadays, the well-preserved ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
